If you have over 30K miles you need to inspect your shifter boots for tears. The smaller boot mounts to the transmission to seal the oil around the shifter. This small boot keeps dirt from entering and oil from escaping the shift turret.  It also improives shifter feel.

You can do a simple visual by removing the console and large shift boot and inspect for wear and tear.
